The Baluch Terrorists

WITH THE REVELATION of the key role played by Mohammed in al Qaeda’s terrorist operations, a new element had to be factored into the picture of “loose networks” of Islamist terrorists. Mohammed was not merely Ramzi Yousef’s coconspirator in the 1995 plot against American jetliners; the two in fact reportedly have a long-standing connection. Both have been identified as Pakistani Baluch, born and raised in Kuwait. Mohammed, moreover, is supposedly a relative of Yousef. They are part of a larger circle that includes Abdul Hakim Murad, who was arrested and convicted with Yousef for the 1995 plane bombing plot. Murad, another Pakistani Baluch, is said to be Yousef’s childhood friend. U.S. officials have since identified three more members of this circle as major al Qaeda figures and relatives of Yousef and Mohammed. Needless to say they too are Pakistani Baluch.

In short, the current understanding of U.S. officials, developed in the investigation of al Qaeda since September 11, is that a tight-knit group, essentially a family, lies at the core of the major Islamic terrorist attacks that America has suffered over the past decade.
